This is a TEN-DAY (2-WEEK!) project where students learn about the human body organ systems!

This project was created to give students ownership in learning about the human body. In this project, students will:

•Research a human body organ system in a group

•Create a presentation

•Share their knowledge with the class through a presentation

For each organ system, students will learn:

•The function of the system

•The main organs / parts of the system

•How the system maintains homeostasis in the body

•How the system interacts with other systems to keep the organism alive

•An analogy for each organ system

The 11 organ systems included in this project are:

1) Integumentary System

2) Skeletal System

3) Muscular System

4) Nervous System

5) Circulatory System

6) Respiratory System

7) Excretory System

8) Digestive System

9) Endocrine System

10) Immune System

11) Reproductive System

This product comes with:

1) An overview file that describes everything that is included in this product

2) Teacher guide lesson plan

3) Project guidelines handout

4) Presentation schedule sheet to keep track of groups and their presentation dates

5) Presentation notes handout – to ensure students are actively listening during presentations and getting a copy of the information to reference and study later

6) Answer key for presentation notes – great for a teacher reference and for students absent on presentation days!

7) Rubric grading sheet – perfect for both easy grading and for students to use as a checklist while completing the project!

8) Group evaluation form – to make sure students are held accountable for fair teamwork

9) Finished project example (a slideshow on the endocrine system)

I created this project for my freshman Biology class. This project could be used in any middle or high school science class (such as Biology or Human Anatomy & Physiology) in which the human body is part of the curriculum. I would plan on more class time for middle school students and less class time for upper level high school classes, as most 11-12th graders can work at a quicker pace.

TIME

This project took my freshman two weeks (10 class periods) to complete. This is the breakdown I recommend:

· Day 1: Overview of the project, get students into groups

· Days 2-3: Research organ system

· Days 4-5: Create presentation

· Days 6-9: Presentations

· Day 10: Finish presentations, wrap up project

SUPPLIES

· Students will need to research their organ system, so they will need access to textbooks, class notes, books, and/or the internet.

· They will also need to present their research so they will need supplies for their presentation of choice. Examples would include:

– a poster with markers, scissors, and glue

– a computer to create for a PowerPoint presentation or brochure

· If the teacher decides to provide hard copies of the handout sheet and grading rubric, those should also be printed and copied.
