Periodic Table Battleship is played like the classic Battleship game we all know and love, only this time the board game is Periodic Tables! This game transforms the classic game of Battleship into an engaging learning experience that gets students identifying, locating, recognizing, and saying elements in a fun and unique way.

WHAT MAKES OUR PERIOIDIC TABLE BATTLESHIP GAME UNIQUE?

We included two different set-ups to play!

One-Page Periodic Table Game. This game board is unique and the easiest way to play! Just print the game, fold it in half, and your students are ready to play. The instructions are located right on the game board! No additional set-up is necessary!
Two-Page Periodic Table Game. This game board requires a manila folder. Simply tape or paperclip page 1 (Partner’s Periodic Table) into the top of the manila folder and page 2 (My Periodic Table) into the bottom of the manila folder. The game board also has directions for set-up and play on the pages.

**If you would like to reuse the games we recommend laminating the periodic tables and having students use dry erase markers on them. They can be erased and the boards can be used again and again!

HOW TO PLAY

In this two-player game (pair your students to play), students “hide” 5 ships on their periodic table by coloring or shading corresponding elements for each ship. The ships can be aligned horizontally or vertically. The students then take turns saying elements or characteristics of elements to guess where the ships may be hidden. They will “hit” and “miss” ships until all 5 ships are “sunk” and they win the game! Students have so much fun playing this game, they don’t even realize they are practicing element characteristics on the periodic table!

WHEN TO PLAY

Depending on where you are in your curriculum or what you would like your students to review or learn, students can play the game by choosing different element characteristics. Some examples include:

Element symbol
Element name
Atomic Number
Group and period number
Number of protons

EASY SUB PLANS!

Another common use for this lesson is for sub plans. With a teacher guide included with this activity, all you will need to do is share the guide and game with a sub and your class will be good to go! The fold and go activity is perfect for subs – there’s no set up!

Supplies Needed:
