This is a 3-4 day project where students create a Cell Brochure that compares a tourist attraction to a cell! Their brochures must be creative and catchy so as to attract people to their cell and persuade them to visit!

An included template allows this lesson to be either physical copies or completely digital!

This project was created to give students a creative way to view a cell and remember the functions of the organelles in the cell. They will create analogies for 8 different organelles to draw connections between a cell and their choice of tourist attraction. When students create analogies, it helps them to link complex ideas to something that is familiar to them, thus helping students to visualize abstract concepts.

Have you ever thought of a cell as a hotel? A tourist island? A zoo? An aquarium? A shopping center? The possibilities are endless with the creativity of your students!

We included everything needed for this project to run smoothly! In addition to the project handout, we included a teacher guide, student examples, grading rubric, student template, and brainstorming sheet!

In this project, students will:

· Compare a cell to a tourist attraction.

· Differentiate between animal and plant cells by choosing 8 organelles in their choice of cell.

· Create analogies for 8 organelles and relate them to a tourist attraction.

· Create an eye-catching brochure that contains 8 organelles and their analogies with accompanying pictures.

This project comes with:

1) An overview file that describes everything that is included in this product

2) Teacher guide lesson plan

3) Project guidelines student handout

4) Student Project Brainstorming Worksheet

5) Grading Rubric

6) Finished Project Example

7) Optional Student Brochure Template

GRADE LEVELS

I created this project for my freshman Biology class. This project could be used in any middle or high school science class grades 6-12 (such as Life Science, Biology, or Human Anatomy & Physiology) in which cells are part of the curriculum. I would plan on more class time for middle school students and less class time for upper level high school classes, as most high school students can work at a quicker pace.

TIME

This project took my freshman students 4 class periods to complete. This timeline can be easily changed to fit your needs depending on how quickly the students work or if you would like them to take their brochures home to finish. My recommended 4 day in-class timeline is provided in the Teacher Guide.

SUPPLIES NEEDED

· Access to class textbooks, class notes, books, and/or the internet. (For organelle functions)

· Students will need supplies to complete the brochure. They will need paper, pencils, and coloring supplies such as markers or colored pencils. If students have access to computers, they could also create their brochures in a slide or document. (A sample template is provided for the electronic option.)

· Print and copy the Brainstorming Worksheet, one worksheet per student.

· If the teacher decides to provide hard copies of the handout sheet and grading rubric, those should also be printed and copied. Otherwise, they must be posted to a class website that is easily accessible to reference.
