This product contains a list of essential vocabulary terms on the Scientific Method. There are spaces on the vocabulary sheet for students to write the definition in their own words and draw a picture that helps them to remember the term. The vocabulary sheet is structured to aid in students’ studying as well. The terms are organized into columns so that students can fold their paper over to cover the definition and/or picture, so that they can quiz themselves.

The 20 terms included on this vocabulary sheet are:

1. Scientific Method
2. Qualitative
3. Quantitative
4. Observation
5. Inference
6. Problem Statement
7. Hypothesis

**This product also contains an ANSWER KEY with my own definitions that have worked well to help students best understand the terms. The key also contains colorful, crisp images for each term as well. Of course, since students are writing the definitions in their own words and drawing their own pictures, their answers will vary, but this key will aid you in helping your students!

**Please Note: This vocabulary list is in a secured format and is NOT editable. If there are additional terms you would like included in this list please email us at mrandmrsroosterTPT@gmail.com. Thank you!

THE BACK STORY

When I first started teaching Biology, I quickly learned how important it was for students to have a place to write all of the essential content vocabulary definitions, so I created my first vocabulary sheet. It was the standard list of terms – straight from the textbook, with a space to copy the definition from the textbook’s glossary. It didn’t take long for me to realize this “copy from the glossary” method does not work well! While most vocab sheets are useful as study tools, since the definitions are all in the same place, my students did not understand the definitions, nor were the definitions sticking with them.

My vocabulary sheets now are my finished products that have been TWEAKED OVER FIVE YEARS OF TEACHING. I have focused my lists on essential terms by adding terms that were crucial to understanding content and deleting textbook terms that didn’t hold as much importance. I also stress to my students that they need to write the definition in their OWN WORDS. I give them the scenario: Imagine your younger brother, sister, cousin, friend, etc. asks you what a term means. Write the definition on your vocab sheet that you would say to explain it to them. I have found that when students write the definition in their own words for a younger audience, they tend to remember them better because they had to process the textbook definition and then rewrite it.

What makes my vocabulary sheets really stand out from others, however, is the column for students to DRAW A PICTURE to illustrate the term. We can all agree that when students have an image of the word, it helps them to remember it better. What better image for them than their own drawing? It works wonders!

HOW TO USE THE PRODUCT IN THE CLASSROOM

I give my students a new vocabulary sheet every unit. I print out and distribute my vocabulary sheets at the start of the unit. I give the students a due date for the vocabulary sheet. Depending on the unit, this may be the day of a quiz or test, or a few days before the test.

The very first time I introduce my vocabulary sheets to my students, I explain to them that the vocab sheet is intended as a study tool for them, and that it is most beneficial to them if they write the definitions in their own words. I give them the following scenario: Imagine that your younger brother (or sister or cousin or friend, etc.) asks you what one of the terms on your vocab sheet means. How would you define the term for them in your own words? Write that simplified definition on your vocab sheet. Students understand the terms better when they need to process the definition and write it in their own words.

Then I explain the picture column by telling them they are to draw a picture that helps them to remember the term. There is no one correct answer for this. We will also complete the first few terms together as a class to model it.

As the unit progresses, I often have students take out their vocab sheets so they can write their definitions as they take notes. The vocab sheets also work well for an additional activity for students to work on during class if they have any “down time”. Such as, if they finished a lab, they could go work on their vocab sheets. They also work great for study tools. Sometimes as warm-ups, I have students pull out their vocab sheets and quiz each other on the terms.
