Unplugged: Keyboarding Battleship to the rescue!
Woke up this morning feeling sick and needed immediate sub plans.
Got to school and the internet wasn’t working.
Get to the computer lab and it’s being used for standardized testing.
Go to start your lesson and the website you planned to use isn’t working.
Do any of these scenarios sound familiar? We’ve been there too! That’s why we created this unplugged lesson for Computer, Technology, and STEM teachers: Keyboard Battleship! It’s played like the classic Battleship game we all know and love, only this time the board game is keyboards! This game transforms the classic game of Battleship into an engaging learning experience that gets students identifying, locating, recognizing, and saying keyboard keys in a fun and unique way. They are practicing keyboarding without a keyboard present!
What makes our Keyboard Battleship unique?
- It comes with a full lesson plan for teachers – perfect for sub plans and observations!
- Our game board comes with the setup and directions right on the printable game board. It is ready to print, fold, and use!
- Our keyboard has “right” and “left” on duplicated keys to aid students in saying the exact keyboard keys.
In this two-player game (pair your students to play), students “hide” 5 ships on their keyboard by coloring or shading corresponding keys for each ship. The students then take turns saying key names to guess where the ships may be hidden. They will “hit” and “miss” ships until all 5 ships are “sunk” and they win the game! Students have so much fun playing this game, they don’t even realize they are practicing key locations on the keyboard!
Students love playing games to learn keyboarding skills. Now, they can learn and play even when a keyboard isn’t readily accessible! We all have days were we enter the computer lab to find the internet is out, another teacher needs the lab for testing, or the website you planned to use for today’s lesson just isn’t loading. This unplugged lesson will come to the rescue! No technology is required! You can simply print the PDF, make copies, and use it!
Another common use for this lesson is for sub plans. With a full lesson plan included with this activity, all you will need to do is share the lesson and game with a sub and your class will be good to go!
