POWERPOINT:
This product contains a ready to use PowerPoint with 27 slides. When you purchase this product, you will download the actual PowerPoint that I created so that you will be able to use the animations on the slides and you can edit the slides to best meet your needs! The PowerPoint briefly introduces the students to what a light microscope is and includes a labeled microscope so that you can go through the parts of the microscope together. Then the PowerPoint goes through a step-by-step approach of how to use a light microscope. The PowerPoint ends with guided questions and their answers to make sure students take away the important concepts.
STUDENT HANDOUT:
A 2-page student handout is also included with this product. The first page is a guided notes handout that goes along with the PowerPoint. The second page includes a microscope, which the students label, and it also includes the guided questions from the PowerPoint with spaces for the students to write their answers.
HOW TO USE THIS PRODUCT IN THE CLASSROOM:
I used this product with my freshman Biology class and my Junior/Senior Anatomy and Physiology class, but it is written at a level that would also work well in a middle school Life Science class.
You will need to make a copy of the handout for each of your students. As you go through the PowerPoint with the class, the students will be filling in the guided notes page. My students found the PowerPoint to be easy to follow along with, and the guided notes kept them focused and attentive. While I went through the PowerPoint, I put a light microscope that the students would be using in the front of the class. I pointed out the different parts and demonstrated how to use it as we went through the slides.
After going through the steps on how to use the light microscope, the students labeled the light microscope on the back of the handout and answered the guided questions.
The notes page worked really well with my students because I used page 1 of the handout as a reference sheet during labs. Thus, the students had the steps on how to use the microscope right in front of them as they worked with the microscope during labs. When students needed help with the microscope, I always instructed the students to follow the steps first, ask their lab partner second, and then ask me third. It made instructing a class of 30 students with 15 different microscopes a lot more bearable!
